Finnrock history

Kennel Finnrock was founded some time in the 1960’s. At that time a new dograce, staffordshirebullterrier, was imported to Finland. Four dogs were imported and my mother Sinikka Kostamo (Hyttinen) was an owner of a bitch called Bandits Brindarock, “Brinda”. Within Brindas first litter was confirmed kennelname Finnrock.

Finnrock have had 2 litters so far, both staffordshirebullterrier litters. After Brinda my parents have had several “staffies” and with those I begun also my carreer in training dogs. In time I changed from stubborn fighting-dogs to stubborn pulling-dogs and can’t really say whitch one is more challenging to work with. The main reason to change race was my trekking hobbies. I needed a dog that could manage outdoors no matter what the weather or temperatures.

My mother was kind enough to give me her kennelname after she didn’t need it anymore. This change was made year 2006.

My first pet was actually a cat. I got Joonas the cat year 1997. My second pet was also a cat… Eelis came 1998. Reason for that was that we lived in a flat and could not take the right kind of dog. As soon as we moved to an apartment year 1999 I got alaskanmalamute, Ruufus, that was not registered. We tried several hobbies and competed a lot in obedience and agility. Got nice results too! Two years later year 2001 I bought a second unregistered alaskanmalamute. That was a two year old male Otto, who was from the same litter as Ruufus. So suddenly I got two years old brothers. Who had nothing else in mind that fighting together It took more than a year to get the guys manage to stand each other. After that things got easier and hard trekking tours grow them up to be the strongest team ever. Nowadays they can’t really manage without each other. With Otto and Ruufus we did a lot of obedience competitions and agility, skied, carted, pulled a sled, a pulka, swam, ran, travelled, did trekking tours walking and skiing… Those big furry friends followed me everywhere.

With a help of the breeder and Finnish Alaskanmalamuteclub we managed to register Otto and Ruufus in Finnish kennelclub and they become officially alaskanmalamutes. Afer that I had the change to take apart in sledging tests and to alaskanmalamutes official weightpulling test. At the same time I got interested in sled dog races, took a part in one (rode 10 km race with my little team Otto and Ruufus), got extremely poor result and totally fell in love with the sport. And after that the well known result is the fact that one needs a few more dogs…

First came alaskanmalamute Agnes year 2003. What a cute little girl she was but not a competing pulling dog. After all she suits better in her present owners pack than mine. Agnes has been trained and tested in obedience and weightpulling. She has ran several sledging races with nice results. After Agnes I was lucky to be able to borrow some of my frinds alaskanmalamutes and didn’t have to buy so many own at once. It turn out that I couldn’t find interesting enough combination in malamutes, so I made a trip to Norway and bought a greenlanddog January 2004. I totally fell in love with Niklas’s uniqueness and I bought second greenalnd dog summer 2007. December 2007 happened that I got also one Alaskan husky to work as a leader. So winter 2008 I have 5 dogs: 2 alaskanmalamutes, 2 greenland dogs and one alaskanhusky.

Those dogs that have been training and competing in my team has all got a sled dog test results, some of them all three: racing test for speed, working test for suitability and skills in teamwork in a dogteam and the weightpullingtest for individual will to work hard and pull heavy loads.

Dog shows are not so important for evaluating the dog, but we take a part time to time just for fun.

The work continues and it is allways interesting to have new dogs in the team. Last two years I have had eaven siberian huskies in use and it is a big challenge to make a nicely working team out of huskies, malamutes and greenland dogs.
